Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 Passes the House

Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1722, the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 with a bipartisan vote of 254 to 152. The proposed legislation grants Federal employees eligibility to telework and requires Federal agencies to establish telework policies and designate a Telework Managing Officer.

The legislation, cosponsored by Reps. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), Frank Wolf (R-Va.) and Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.), now heads to President Obama for his signature.

The General Services Administration (GSA) estimates agencies could increase productivity of more than $2.3 billion annually if workers telecommute at least once a week. Agencies also could save money on electricity, office supplies and office space.

The Performance Institute applauds the Congress for their action on this issue, as it will lead to increased productivity, higher efficiency and significant savings for the American taxpayer. The Institute is working closely with the US Office of Personnel Management, the Telework Exchange and The Federal Performance Coalition to ensure that organizations are able to accurately and objectively evaluate the performance of all employees, regardless of their work location.
