US Policies on Maternity Leave ‘Among the Worst’
A study from McGill University’s Institute for Health and Social Policy finds that the United States is behind most high, middle and low-income countries in family workplace policies. The U.S. is one of five countries out of 173 that does not provide or require companies to provide paid maternity leave. The other countries include: Lesotho, Liberia, Swaziland and Papua New Guinea. “Under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, U.S. workers are allowed to take up to 12 weeks leave to tend to family or medical needs, but their absence is unpaid.” Click on the link below to read the entire article: http://www.foxnews.com.

Washington, D.C. always has something going on for its tourists and locals alike. Spring is a great time in the city, as the weather is warm, but not humid like the summer and the different yearly festivals begin. Due to federal funding, almost all sites, including the cherry blossoms, WWII Memorial and National Zoo are free to the public.
-
Cherry Blossom Festival: March 31st-April 15th: An annual tradition in the nation’s capital, the cherry blossoms that surround the tidal basin were a gift from Japan in 1912. For more information on the festival, parade and peek days to visit, click on the link below: http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org.
-
The World War II Memorial: One of the newest memorials, the World War II opened to the public on April 29, 2004. -
The National Zoo: Home of Tai Shan, one of the zoo’s newest arrivals, the panda cub has a brand new home on The Asia Trail. This attraction is a hit for both children and adults. For more information, click on the link below: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/.
